ENERGY CODE COMPLIANCE CALCULATIONS
What is an energy calc?
Energy Calculations
An energy calculation is a specific form that shows whether your building passes the energy code in your area or not. In some cases, people use the term โenergy calcโ to refer to a Manual J.ย While related, Manual J determines HVAC system sizing, whereas the energy calculation evaluates overall building envelope compliance.
Energy code documentation requirements vary by state. In Florida, an energy calc would consist of either Form 402 (prescriptive method) or Form 405 (performance method). We are able to do either form but typically will use Form 405 as it allows some plusses and minuses on certain aspects of the construction to pass code in a more cost-efficient way.
ProCalcs provides energy code compliance documentation for residential projects across all 50 states.
We serve all of the US
In other parts of the country, the form required to show energy code compliance is a REScheck report.
In Washington State, they require a specific form available online from them or through an excel spreadsheet.
What all of these forms have in common is that they require putting in information about the building envelope including wall and foundation types, insulation levels, glass details, etc. to show that the energy efficiency level of the house will meet or exceed the current code requirements.
If you'd like to learn more about the specific code in your area, head to Digital Codes (iccsafe.org) and search by state to find the applicable codes in your area.
